Tips for Office Gift Giving

Giving gifts at the office is a tricky thing for most of us.  We want to be professional but also engage in the holiday spirit a bit. If you’re looking for some reliable tips to help you figure out that balance, you’re going to find these tips to be especially helpful in making your gift-giving as special as possible — in the right way.

Top tips for giving appropriate gifts at the office

Regardless of whether you’re gifting co-workers, staff at the front desk of your larger corporation, or even managers and supervisors, here are some general pointers to keep in mind to help keep it as smooth as possible.

  • Don’t spend a lot of money: The point of giving gifts at work is to let them know that you thought of them during the holidays and wanted to give them something special. Buying something lavish and expensive is not only inappropriate, but it’s also totally unnecessary.  If you find something for them in the bargain bin, there’s nothing to be ashamed of!  It really is the thought that counts.
  • Skip the homemade gifts (except baked goods): Homemade gifts are great for friends and family, for sure. But in a work environment, homemade gifts can sometimes cross that boundary for appropriateness.  If you do decide to go homemade, stick with something really simple like a hat or a scarf.  Baked goods are always good, too, of course.  If you want to include everyone in this, just make a breakroom selection of baked goods and leave a sign with them!
  • Go fancy with the wrapping paper: Many skip wrapping paper or go basic when it comes to the wrapping, but the office is one place where you can go wild and genuinely have fun with it! Add some curly ribbons, use the “nice” wrapping paper…whatever you want to do to make it look great!  When it comes to corporate gift-giving, the look really will matter, so feel free to really go wild with this.
  • Don’t get personal: Give them a generic gift. Don’t try to build a personal connection with someone that you work with.  If you are friends outside of work, give them a personal gift out of the workplace, and then (if you are giving gifts to groups that involve them) give them a small professional gift.  Personal gifts in the workplace can make things awkward.

Gift-giving can be fun at the office

Even though gift-giving at the office will take effort compared to buying gifts for the average personal connection, it can be fun and it will be wonderful when looking for a memorable way to celebrate the holidays with those around you — even at work.

These tips and reminders will help get it just right when you are looking for a chance to make gift-giving fun and stress-free this year.  Who knows, maybe you’ll even make it a trend in your office.  These days, we could certainly all use some holiday cheer, right?  These tips will help make it successful.
